Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Ward I
I. Overview Ward I of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University was founded by Professor Wang Haidong, a renowned senior expert in hepatobiliary surgery in Hainan Province, and has gradually developed and expanded. Currently, Ward I has 2 Chief Physicians, 2 Associate Chief Physicians, and 3 Attending Physicians. Among the physicians, 1 holds a doctoral degree and 4 hold master's degrees. The team includes: 1 individual selected for the Hainan Provincial "515" Talent Program; 1 recognized as a Category D High-Level Talent and 1 as Category E under the Hainan Free Trade Port scheme; 1 core member of a Hainan Provincial "Double Hundred" Talent Team; 1 Standing Committee member of a national association; 3 Committee members of national associations; 1 Chairperson and 2 Vice-Chairpersons of provincial associations in Hainan. The ward currently operates 32 open beds, admits nearly 2000 patients annually, and performs over 800 surgeries, with minimally invasive surgeries accounting for more than 70%. It is a Hainan Provincial Level I Clinical Key Specialty (General Surgery) and part of the Hainan Provincial Organ System Clinical Center (Digestive Diseases Center).
II. Medical Services The department performs numerous hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeries at a leading level within the province, possessing extensive experience particularly in the surgical treatment of complex intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones, huge liver cancer, liver cancer complicated with cirrhosis, cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and ampullary cancer. In minimally invasive surgery, it was one of the earliest units in the province to perform laparoscopy and choledochoscopy.
Current specialized services include:
Laparoscopic minimally invasive hemihepatectomy, lobectomy, segmentectomy, and irregular liver resection.
Transumbilical single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hemihepatectomy.
Surgical treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma combined with caudate lobe resection.
Minimally invasive comprehensive treatment for biliary stones (combined dual- or triple-endoscopy).
PTCS for treating complex intrahepatic bile duct stones.
Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for pancreatic diseases (Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy is standardized and safe, aiming for provincial promotion; innovative pancreaticojejunostomy techniques aim for national impact; the department performs the highest number of laparoscopic duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resections in the province).
Robotic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
Minimally invasive surgery for severe pancreatitis.
MDT and individualized comprehensive treatment for malignant tumors of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas.
III. Scientific Research Supported by the hospital's central laboratory and the Hainan Provincial Digestive Disease Center, and under the support of the NHC's "Hospital-Supports-Department" policy, the department has established long-term cooperation with prestigious domestic institutions (e.g., Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University). Experts are stationed in our department, enhancing our diagnostic and treatment level while building a research platform connected with top domestic hospitals.
In recent years, the department has undertaken 2 Hainan Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects and participated in 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 3 Hainan Provincial Key R&D Program projects. Over the past three years, it has published 14 papers, including 5 SCI-indexed papers and 9 Chinese core journal papers.
Currently, the department is collaborating with the university's Basic Medical School and School of Public Health, utilizing the platform of the Hainan Preventive Medicine Association's Committee for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease Prevention and Control, to conduct basic and epidemiological research on key hepatobiliary diseases in Hainan.
IV. Teaching & Education The ward currently has 32 beds available for clinical teaching and 7 teachers with teaching certificates. The department also includes 1 Director of the General Surgery Teaching and Research Section and 1 Secretary of the Surgery Teaching and Research Section.
The department undertakes surgery teaching tasks for Hainan Medical University's five-year clinical medicine, psychiatric medicine, clinical pharmacy, pediatrics programs, as well as for clinical medicine college programs, upgrade-from-college programs, and international education classes. This includes theoretical teaching, clinical clerkships, and internships, utilizing methods like traditional lectures, PBL, and CBL. It also provides rotation training for national standardized residency training in surgery and general practice. The department received the "Outstanding Internship Department" award from Hainan Medical University for two consecutive years (2022-2024). Faculty actively participate in university teaching competitions and have received "Outstanding Teacher" awards.
V. Prospects The department will build upon high-quality medical services, focusing on developing minimally invasive techniques, especially the application of robotic surgery in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery (noting the recent initial shift from laparoscopy to robotics in major domestic medical centers), aiming to solidify its position as a top department in Hainan and strive to enter the ranks of advanced national teams.
It will actively conduct clinically oriented scientific research, including studies on the etiology, molecular mechanisms of invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance of hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies, alongside clinical research; basic and clinical research on the causes of biliary stones; clinical application research on new minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment technologies for hepatobiliary diseases; and the application of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases.
Leveraging its advantage as the base for the Director and Secretary of the Surgery Teaching and Research Section, the department will actively engage in teaching reform, overall improve the teaching level of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, focus on cultivating students' clinical and scientific thinking, and contribute to the university's development.
Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Ward II
I. Overview Ward II of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University integrates medical care, teaching, and research. It is a National Key Specialty Construction Project, a Hainan Provincial Key Discipline, and a major component of the Hainan Provincial Digestive Disease Center. The current physician team comprises 7 members, consisting of several mid-level and young key technical backbones in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, forming a standardized three-tier physician team. This includes 3 senior titles and 2 medical doctors (PhD). The ward has 32 beds.
II. Medical Services In medical services, the department's characteristic techniques cover the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, and spleen, as well as various laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries. It routinely performs laparoscopic and open liver resections, pancreaticoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy, radical resection for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, radical cholecystectomy, laparoscopic splenectomy, and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration. Notably, its surgical ERCP techniques and the combined triple-endoscopy minimally invasive treatment for common bile duct stones have reached advanced domestic levels. Additionally, the department performs complex minimally invasive surgeries such as precision liver resection using fluorescent laparoscopy combined with intraoperative ultrasound, robot-assisted liver resection, and laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy.
III.
