The predecessor of the Department of Urology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the Department of Urology of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital) was the Department of Urology of Hainan Provincial Agricultural Reclamation General Hospital. The history of the Department of Urology of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital in carrying out minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of urology can be traced back to June 9, 1960, when it was the first institution in Hainan Province to carry out minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment technology for urology.
In May 1982, the urology professional group of the Department of Urology of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital was established, under the jurisdiction of the Fourth Surgery Department (General Surgery and Urology). It was one of the earliest specialized urology departments established in Hainan Province and took the lead in carrying out renal transplantation surgery in the region.
On January 1, 2008, the Department of Urology was established as an independent department. The first director of the department was Dr. Xiao Jinzhu, a professor and chief physician. In February 2010, Chief Physician Zhang Guoqing served as the director of the Department of Urology.
In October 2016, the Department of Urology was expanded into two wards. The renal transplantation professional group was placed in Ward 2 of the Department of Urology. Dr. Che Xianping, a professor and chief physician, served as the director of Ward 1 of the Department of Urology, and Professor He Shuming, a chief physician, served as the director of Ward 2 of the Department of Urology.
On July 31, 2018, the renal transplantation professional group was separated from Ward 2 of the Department of Urology to form an independent Department of Organ Transplantation. Dr. Wang Yi, a professor and chief physician, served as the academic leader of the Department of Organ Transplantation.
On May 1, 2021, the renal transplantation professional group was separated from the Department of Organ Transplantation to establish the Department of Renal Transplantation.
The large discipline of the Department of Urology of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital consists of the Department of Urology and the Department of Renal Transplantation, with a total of 153 beds. Among them, Ward 1 of the Department of Urology has 65 beds, Ward 2 has 53 beds, and the Department of Renal Transplantation has 35 beds. There are 32 practicing physicians, including 6 with doctoral degrees, 18 with master's degrees, 7 chief physicians, and 11 associate chief physicians.
After more than 40 years of development, especially the construction and development in the past decade, the Department of Urology of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital has become the largest urology department in Hainan Province in terms of scale, number of practitioners, number of admitted patients, and number of surgical cases.
The Department of Renal Transplantation, part of the large urology discipline, is the chairman unit of the Dialysis and Transplantation Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and the chairman unit of the Organ Transplantation Professional Committee of the Hainan Medical Association (led by Professor Wang Yi).
The Department of Urology is the vice-chairman unit of the Urological and Andrological Reproductive Medicine Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotion Association for Medical and Healthcare (led by Professor Che Xianping), the Andrology Professional Committee of the Hainan Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (led by Professor Che Xianping), the chairman unit of the Urological and Andrological Reproductive Oncology Professional Committee of the Hainan Anti-Cancer Association (led by Professor He Shuming), and the vice-chairman unit of the Urology Professional Committee (led by Professor Che Xianping) and the Andrology Professional Committee (led by Professor He Shuming) of the Hainan Medical Association. It is also a member unit of the Hainan Provincial Urological Disease Research Center (listed by the Hainan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, including the Department of Nephrology, Department of Renal Transplantation, Department of Urology, Nephrology Research Institute, and Transplantation Research Institute of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital).
The Department of Urology of Hainan Medical University Second Hospital is a national standardized training base for urology residents and a training base for restricted diagnosis and treatment technologies in urology in Hainan Province.
The large discipline of the Department of Urology consists of Ward 1 of the Department of Urology, Ward 2 of the Department of Urology, and the Department of Renal Transplantation. The personnel structures of the three units are shown in Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3 respectively.

Minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment technologies have become routine in the Department of Urology.
At the end of 2022, the Jingfeng robotic surgical system was trialed in the hospital. Chief Physicians He Shuming and Chen Hualei successively performed about 30 robot-assisted laparoscopic urological surgeries, marking that the hospital has gained experience in robot-assisted laparoscopic surgeries. On November 7, 2024, the hospital obtained the approval document from the Hainan Provincial Health Commission to purchase the robotic surgical system, which is currently under procurement.
