The Department of Nephrology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is a Class I Clinical Key Specialty in Hainan Province, the host unit of the Hainan Provincial Blood Purification Quality Control Center, and the Hainan Provincial Clinical Medical Research Center for Urinary System Diseases. It is a nephrology specialty with the most complete organizational structure, the largest scale and the strongest comprehensive strength in the province, integrating nephrology medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, nursing, prevention, health care and quality control. At present, it has a medical and nursing team that is dedicated to their duties, skilled in medical technology and committed to saving lives and healing the wounded. Among the 28 medical and technical team members, there is 1 Hainan Provincial Leading Talent, 3 High-level Talents, 1 Doctoral Supervisor, 1 Master Supervisor, 4 Doctors, 2 Postdoctoral Candidates and 2 Doctoral Candidates.
The Department of Nephrology is currently the only professional department in Hainan Province that integrates "nephrology clinic, chronic kidney disease management center, peritoneal dialysis center, hemodialysis center and kidney disease research institute". The total current floor area is 9,359.14 square meters, with 120 ward beds and 64 dialysis beds in the blood purification center. It admits more than 5,000 patients annually, handles nearly 40,000 outpatient visits annually, performs more than 300 renal biopsies annually, and conducts more than 1,000 vascular access surgeries annually. The chronic kidney disease management center has more than 2,000 patients, the peritoneal dialysis center follows up more than 650 patients, and the hemodialysis center has nearly 300 patients. The department's scale and the number of annual admitted patients are among the top in the province, showing an annual upward trend, and continuously attracting patients from other provinces.
The department hosts and undertakes a number of scientific research projects, including 6 General Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; sub-projects of the National 863 Program and 973 Program; research funds from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science; funds from the PKD Foundation of the United States; 15 projects such as Hainan Provincial Major Science and Technology Plan Special Projects and Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects; it has obtained more than 10 patents; won 1 First Prize of Hainan Provincial Natural Science Award; and published 42 SCI papers, including those in international authoritative journals such as Circulation, PNAS, JASN and KI.
At present, the department undertakes the teaching work of integrated medical urinary system diseases at Hainan Medical University. It has long been responsible for the theoretical teaching, probation and internship of international students, undergraduates and junior college students of Hainan Medical University, undertakes the standardized training of residents in urinary system diseases, takes on the task of further education and training for medical and nursing personnel in nephrology and blood purification specialties in Hainan Province, and is responsible for the training of masters, doctors and postdoctoral fellows.
The Department of Nephrology will continue to strengthen the existing all-round structure of "clinical ward + peritoneal dialysis + hemodialysis + vascular access + renal pathology + chronic disease management + clinical outpatient service + kidney disease research institute", while comprehensively improving its medical treatment, teaching and scientific research capabilities, to build a nephrology diagnosis and treatment center with regional influence.
