Department of Gastroenterology Introduction
I. Overview
The Department of Gastroenterology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University was established in 1952. Under the successive leadership of directors Liu Xunchen, Wu Feixiong, Su Lu, Weng Jingbiao, Xie Huizhong, and the current director Bai Feihu, it was recognized as a key discipline within the hospital in 1998. In 2008, it was approved as a Digestive Endoscopy Training Base by the Ministry of Health. A Liver Disease Center was established in 2011. By 2019, it had become a Provincial Key Specialty and the Hainan Provincial Quality Control Center for Digestive Endoscopic Diseases. In 2021, it was designated as the Hainan Provincial Clinical Research Center for Digestive Diseases, and in 2022, it achieved the status of a National Key Specialty. In recent years, the department has established several prestigious platforms, including the Fan Daiming Academician Innovation Platform – Hainan Provincial Academician Team Innovation Center, the Hainan Sub-center of the Chinese Molecular Medical Center for Helicobacter Pylori, the Hainan Provincial Treatment Center of the Chinese Microbiota Transplantation Platform, the Hainan Sub-center of the National Digestive Disease Research Center, and the Hainan Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease of China.
II. Medical Services
The department currently has 75 inpatient beds and is equipped with advanced medical equipment. It handles an average of 450 monthly discharges and 60,000 annual outpatient visits. The medical staff comprises 42 members, including 6 with senior professional titles and 16 with intermediate titles. In recent years, several clinical sub-specialties have been established, focusing on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Liver Diseases, Fecal Microbiota Transplantation, Gastrointestinal Motility, and Helicobacter Pylori.
III. Scientific Research

We strive to enhance the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of digestive diseases, thereby improving patients' medical experience and quality of life. Through the pursuit of excellence and continuous innovation, our ultimate goal is the sustained development of the department and the long-term health of our patients.
Digestive Endoscopy Center Introduction
I. Overview
The Digestive Endoscopy Center was established in 2003. It is a Provincial Key Specialty, a Basic Digestive Endoscopist Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Chinese Esophageal and Gastric Varices Treatment Base, and a member of the National Alliance for the Prevention and Treatment of Early Gastrointestinal Cancers. The center currently has 13 physicians, including 7 Master's degree holders, 1 Chief Physician, 3 Associate Chief Physicians, and 7 Attending Physicians.
The center operates 10 endoscopy procedure rooms, equipped with advanced endoscopy systems, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), high-frequency electrocautery units, etc. It pioneered several advanced procedures in Hainan Province, including ESD for early gastrointestinal cancers, ERCP, ESVD, EUS-guided variceal puncture, EUS-guided pancreatic cyst puncture and drainage, FNA, and capsule endoscopy. It is also the only facility in the province performing balloon-assisted enteroscopy.
On April 8, 2019, a Digestive Endoscopy Day Ward was established, featuring 8 fixed beds. It admits 80-100 patients monthly, streamlining the hospitalization process and shortening hospital stays for patients with gastrointestinal polyps.
II. Medical Services
Establishing Two Centers: Nine medical staff have completed advanced training in early cancer and ultrasound techniques. Plans are underway to establish an Early Gastrointestinal Cancer Treatment Center and a Pancreatobiliary Disease Treatment Center. These will focus on precise screening for high-risk populations of gastrointestinal tumors and integrating duodenoscopy, SPYGLAS, and EUS to address complex pancreatic and biliary diseases.
Establishing the Hainan Digestive Endoscopy Medical Alliance: The center has already established endoscopy diagnosis and treatment alliances with hospitals in Chengmai County, Lingao County, and Haikou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, among others.
Procedure Volume: The current daily volume of examinations and procedures is 160-180 cases. This is expected to increase to 200-220 cases next year, with a target of reaching 300-350 cases daily within two years.
III. Teaching & Research
Primary-Level Endoscopy Training Base: Since 2017, the center has trained 24 endoscopists from secondary and tertiary hospitals. These doctors have returned to their local hospitals to implement the latest endoscopic treatments, expanding the influence of digestive endoscopy locally.
Restricted-Technique Training Base: The center aims to become a training base for restricted techniques, enrolling 8-10 trainees annually. This will foster collaboration with other institutions and enhance the hospital's influence within Hainan.
Staff Development: Medical staff are regularly sent for external training to learn crucial techniques like EUS, ERCP, and early cancer detection.
Academic Exchange: The center organizes and hosts national academic conferences and aims to potentially host endoscopy academic conferences for Southeast Asia in the future.
Research Focus: While the center's endoscopic techniques are leading within Hainan, enhancing research capability is a key focus for future development. Recently, the center has published 4 core Chinese journal papers and 2 English journal papers. The plan for the next five years includes applying for 1-2 provincial research projects and publishing several core journal and SCI papers.
