I. Overview
SHHMU is a key institution for organ transplantation in Hainan Province and home to the Hainan Key Laboratory of Tropical Diseases. The Department of Hematology is responsible for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, cellular immunotherapy, and research on hematological diseases with tropical characteristics. The department is accredited by the Chinese Bone Marrow Donor Program for unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and holds GCP (Good Clinical Practice) certification. Its core team includes high-level talents from Hainan Province, such as Dr. Dong Min and Dr. Li Limei, with subspecialties in leukemia and transplantation, lymphoma, plasma cell disorders, and more. The department is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), the Ruijin Hospital Blood Disease Medical Consortium, the South China Hematology Specialist Alliance, and the Lymphoma Patient Whole-Process Management Project. It features internationally standardized transplant wards (including 10 transplant rooms and 6 single rooms) and other advanced equipment.
II. Medical Services
The department implements internationally advanced treatment protocols for hematological diseases, including various autologous/allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation techniques (such as DSA-positive haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) and combined transplantation with CAR-T therapy. Leveraging international platforms like EBMT and the policies of the Hainan Free Trade Port, the department continues to introduce innovative technologies. It pioneered the use of the globally innovative drug Motixafortide in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for multiple myeloma and performed Hainan's first allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from a hepatitis C-positive donor, as well as the first commercial CAR-T therapy in the province.
The department has established multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and patient support groups for leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other conditions. It also engages in public education through television and the "Ye Hai Xiang Sui" WeChat public account. The department treats patients from across China and has attracted international patients from countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan, and the United Kingdom.
III. Research Work
In the past five years, the department has published over 10 high-impact SCI papers as first or corresponding authors. It has secured one National Natural Science Foundation project, two Hainan Provincial Natural Science Foundation general projects, and five GCP and clinical research projects.
IV. Education and Training
As a national standardized residency training base, the department undertakes teaching tasks for undergraduate students, international students, master's degree candidates, and resident physicians. It has trained eight master's students, two of whom received national scholarships. Over the past five years, the department has organized five national and provincial continuing education seminars with international speakers and conducted multiple academic promotions at the grassroots level.
Leveraging the opportunities presented by the Hainan Free Trade Port and the high-quality development of Hainan Medical University, the Department of Hematology will continue to prioritize the recruitment and training of doctoral talents. With a focus on critical hematology, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, CAR-T, and other innovative technologies, the department aims to drive clinical translational research and advance medical care, education, and research to contribute to the development of hematology in Hainan.
