Established in 1993, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been jointly awarded the "National Demonstration Unit for TCM Work in General Hospitals" by the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a construction unit of the "National Flagship Department for TCM-Western Medicine Collaboration", the founding chairman unit of the Zhongzui Theory Professional Committee of Hainan Provincial Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the "Hainan Inheritance Base for Hu Xishu Classical Prescriptions Medicine", and the leading unit of the "Hainan Classical Prescriptions Academic Alliance".
It has long undertaken undergraduate teaching at Hainan Medical University, standardized residency training (SRT) teaching and scientific research in the hospital. It is a clinical department integrating medical treatment, teaching and research, which combines TCM-Western medicine treatment with health preservation and healthcare.
Currently, the department has 26 TCM professional medical and nursing staff, including 7 with senior professional titles and 13 with intermediate professional titles, forming a TCM professional and technical team with a reasonable structure and good quality. Relying on the advantages of a Grade III Class A general hospital, the department actively combines classical TCM, TCM natural therapy with modern medicine. In clinical practice, it takes "leading the treatment of common and frequently-occurring diseases, assisting in the treatment of acute and critical diseases, and advocating rehabilitation and prevention of diseases" as its direction. With the TCM Classical Ward and TCM Center as platforms, it adopts oral administration of TCM combined with TCM natural therapy to provide TCM services for patients in the whole hospital. Its accurate application of meridian-specific classical prescriptions, distinctive TCM characteristic diagnosis and treatment methods, and good clinical efficacy enjoy a high reputation in Hainan Province.
The Department of TCM regularly provides TCM characteristic services such as oral administration of TCM decoctions, ointment prescriptions, TCM herbal infusions, acupuncture therapy, adult tuina (massage), pediatric tuina, moxibustion, ginger therapy, vinegar therapy, collateral therapy, TCM application, acupoint application, acupoint catgut embedding, acupoint injection, auricular point pressing with beans, TCM fumigation and washing, autohemotherapy, cupping therapy, bloodletting therapy, gua sha (scraping therapy), Hehe therapy, and TCM meridian guidance therapy. It also provides TCM preventive health services such as TCM health check-ups, constitution differentiation, and health preservation guidance.
The specific medical services are divided into two parts: the TCM Classical Ward and the TCM Center.
The TCM Classical Ward currently has 21 beds and an independent TCM natural therapy diagnosis and treatment area covering an area of nearly 100 square meters. In clinical practice, it highlights TCM characteristics and advantages, takes classical prescriptions as the foundation, and adheres to the treatment principle of "prioritizing TCM over Western medicine when possible, using TCM first before Western medicine, and combining TCM with Western medicine". It provides individualized and precise treatment plans combining internal and external treatments with "one patient, one prescription" for diseases, and admits patients with diseases of various systems such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, osteoarticular diseases, geriatric diseases, digestive system diseases, respiratory system diseases, and tumors.
It has rich clinical experience in the treatment of TCM dominant diseases and syndromes such as stroke, dizziness, hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, neck-shoulder-waist-leg pain, osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, acute and chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and colitis; TCM rehabilitation for patients after tumor surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy; and TCM regulation for sub-health.
As the first large-scale TCM center in a Grade III Class A general hospital in Hainan Province, it covers an area of nearly 700 square meters and serves as a comprehensive platform for outpatients of the Department of TCM and inpatients of Western medicine clinical departments in the hospital. It has set up TCM outpatient clinics, a Traditional TCM Natural Therapy Center, and a Preventive Treatment of Diseases Center. Among them, the outpatient department has specialized clinics such as renowned veteran TCM experts' clinics, TCM internal medicine, TCM preventive treatment of diseases, TCM gynecology, TCM andrology, TCM pediatrics, TCM acupuncture and tuina, TCM acupoint catgut embedding, and TCM characteristic treatment, providing professional, systematic, comprehensive and high-quality TCM health services for the majority of patients.
The staff of the department has presided over 1 key R&D project of the Hainan Provincial Department of Science and Technology (completed) and 1 joint project of Hainan Provincial Health Commission Science and Technology (under research). They have successively published 3 SCI papers and more than 20 papers in core journals and statistical source journals.
In 2016, the TCM Teaching and Research Section was established, undertaking the tasks of TCM theory teaching for undergraduates of Hainan Medical University, TCM internship guidance, and TCM rotation teaching for general practice SRT students of the hospital. In 2020, it was awarded the "Excellent Internship Guidance Department of Hainan Medical University".
Teachers of the teaching and research section have won 1 second prize in the "Hainan Medical University Clinical Teaching Plan Competition", 1 "Excellent Internship Guidance Teacher of Hainan Medical University", 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes in the Young Teachers' Teaching Competition of the Second Clinical College of Hainan Medical University. Every year, some teachers are rated as "Excellent Teachers" at the hospital level.

It strives towards the vision of building a star-level comprehensive hospital TCM department with classical TCM and natural medicine characteristics that is well-known in China.
